STUDENT LEADERSHIP IN SCHOOLS: HOW SFS GUWAHATI BUILDS FUTURE-READY LEADERS

At SFS Guwahati, leadership is not only a concept, it is also an experience. The school conducts dynamic, yet student-led elections for the Prefectorial Board as an avenue for students to take on important leadership roles, grow a sense of accountability and experience democratic participation. Each year, elections become a prominent moment in the academic calendar. It is not only an event, but an important leadership experience—one that inspires young people, and allows students to develop a tradition of voice, choice and accountability.

Student Leadership Starts with Participation

In order to become a student leader, students begin with self-nomination. Those students wishing to be leaders put themselves forward to run for elected positions that include School Captain, House Captains, Cultural and Sports Captains, Class Captains & Vice Captains etc. ! The act of putting your name forward is in itself, a powerful moment of self-belief and bravery. Next, the aspiring student leaders must prepare and present an appeal, or manifestos, on what they would contribute to school life. These manifestos are performed in person to fellow students primarily in their classrooms, but also sometimes to the whole school community at morning assembly, allowing candidates to meet, speak to, and connect with their peers. It is a platform where action meets ideas, and where students learn about a clear, convincing, and supported delivery.

Voting as a Student: A Lesson in Democracy

One of the most rewarding activities of the student leadership programme at SFS Guwahati is the act of voting. Every student, regardless of class, has a fair, organized election, and each student's votes for candidates who they believe best should hold leadership positions. This exercise is fundamental in conveying democratic values; it has heightened the students' understanding of informed decision making, leadership ethics, and common good. In addition to encouraging them to think beyond popularity, but to the leadership attributes that matter: service, teamwork, vision and self-discipline.

The Prefectorial Board: Leadership in Action

Once elected, the Prefectorial Board is the public representation of student leadership on campus, representing the student body in maintaining order, arranging functions, coordinating events, and supporting school management as a conduit between the student community and the school. They fulfill real functions of responsibility. They represent a student community and lead by example in both academic and co-curricular settings. They lead assemblies, assist house events, support junior students, and lead, not through their authority, but by their humility and responsibility.

The Leadership Process for Holistic Student Development

The student election at SFS Guwahati is more than just the formation of a student foreman. It is about developing students who are future-ready. Through the campaign, public speaking, collective planning, and problem-solving activities, students gain invaluable 21st-century skills that extend well beyond the classroom. Through these experiences, students learn communication, empathy, and determination. They learn that leadership means serving others, promoting and being an active participant in social change, and leading by example.

SFS Guwahati: A School that Fosters Confident and Compassionate Leaders

By providing students with opportunities lead, serve and grow, SFS Guwahati reiterates its commitment to holistic schooling and education. Leadership at SFS Guwahati is not about the authority associated with being a student leader, rather, it is about character, courage, and contribution.   With every new Prefectorial Board is formed, it kinders the spirit of service and the trust that the students will cultivate a brighter future. SFS Guwahati is preparing students for more than just examinations, we are preparing them for life.
