LEARNING AT HOME: A UNIQUE COVID EXPERIENCE

“Never stop learning; for when we stop learning, we stop growing” – Loyal “Jack” Lewman.

The pandemic COVID-19 has taken its toll all over the world. The current condition of the world, particularly of India, is very sensitive and depressing. People all over the world are locked down in their homes and going through immense sufferings, the schools, colleges, universities and other learning spaces are completely shut down.

This pandemic has paved the way for the new normal. This new normal includes learning at home or learning online. Learning can never be compromised and that is why the governments, schools, colleges, universities, etc. are finding ways to make education available to students at home. Never before have were so many children out of school at the same time, disrupting learning. Since the school closure, UNICEF has been supporting the Ministry of Education and Science in most of the countries so that they can continue their learning process and the teachers and the parents can get access to education even during this lockdown or quarantine. Children and teachers across the country are now meeting through an entirely different platform using their mobile phones, laptops, desktops etc. Apps like Whatsapp, Google Classroom, Google Meet, etc have become spaces of learning. Classes are going on online with most schools switching to virtual classrooms, circulating homework via social networking platforms. Teachers are making persistent efforts to record videos of the topics for discussion. Not only regularly classes but also the extra-curricular activities, projects, presentations, seminars, workshops etc. are being held online. Traditionally, Indian parents are used to a routine getting children ready in the morning, sending them to school, picking them up in the evening and them getting them to complete their homework. But, this is not possible because of the present COVID situation.  Learning now is taking place online according to a set schedule. This is a complete new experience for children, teachers and also parents around the world. Everyone is making the possible efforts to make the best use of the online platform.

Home schooling has not only helped to continue the learning but also has given time to the students to do the things they are passionate about. Besides classes, exams are also being held successfully through the online platforms. Learning at home is a great initiative as students and teachers will not lag behind in their course and also will not be burdened with work, to be completed at the last moment. Schools have been shut to prevent the spread of the virus and this has given way to online classrooms. Students should make the best use of it and enjoy learning.
