BOHAG BIHU – CELEBRATING CULTURE AND LEARNING AT SFS GUWAHATI

As green fields dance along with the tune of spring and air resonates with the beat of dhul and pepa, Assam welcomes the colourful festival of Bohag Bihu, celebrating the New Year of Assam. At SFS Guwahati, the festival is not a celebration, but an instrument of powerful learning, value-based education, and fun-filled experience beyond the confines of the classroom.

Embracing Identity Through Celebration

In SFS, we hold the belief that education would be incomplete without an understanding of one's cultural heritage. Bohag Bihu, which is the most romanticized festival in Assam, gives students a chance to recall their roots. From dressing up in traditional clothes to studying Bihu naas and husori songs, our school provides an immersive experience where students don't just learn about the festival—they experience it. It assists students to value their identity, language, and Assam's distinct diversity. Students who might be from other regions of the country also have an opportunity to learn the values and customs of their peers, building respect and inclusion within the classroom.

Values in Action

Bohag Bihu is not only a time of festivity but also of coming together, gratitude, and renewal. All these resonate well with our Desalite ethos at SFS Guwahati. The practice of seeking blessings, preparing and consuming traditional food, and sweeping the home and neighborhood symbolize respect, cleanliness, and gratitude at their very best. When students participate in Bihu-related events, they aren't just enjoying a performance—they are acquiring cooperation, teamwork, creativity, and respect for tradition.

Experiential Learning at Its Best

We bring many Bohag Bihu-related activities across classes in the school—art and craft for young students, traditional dance and music recitals for older students, and even an interactive session wherein community elders share folk tales and real-life experiences about Bihu. This is experiential learning at its finest—students learning not only the "what" of the festival, but also the "why" and "how." It both increases cultural literacy and sensitizes emotions and provides cross-disciplinary learning—everything from history and geography to music and visual arts.

Language and Literature Come Alive

Bihu is a wonderful chance for students to discover Assamese literature, poetry, and folklore. Our Language instructors utilize the festival as a way to expose students to traditional songs (Bihu geet), and invite them to compose their own poems and thoughts. These writing activities combine cultural pride with creative expression, reinforcing language learning in a significant manner.

A Festival That Brings People Together

What makes Bihu at SFS Guwahati so unique is the sense of oneness that it instills. Whether they belong to any background, students and faculty join in with unbridled passion, celebrating the cultural identity of Assam with dignity and elation. It becomes a learning festival—where the classroom gets extended to the field, the dance floor, and the heart. At SFS Guwahati, we don't merely educate from books—we create well-rounded people. Bohag Bihu is a celebration that is infused with joy, culture, and learning. It gives students the opportunity to celebrate their heritage while enhancing in empathy, creativity, and understanding. This intersection of tradition and learning is what makes the SFS experience so special. Bihu is not merely a holiday. It's a lesson in identity, unity, and happiness. And that, to us, is education in its simplest form.
