URUKA TO MEJI: CELEBRATING TRADITION, TOGETHERNESS & THE ESSENCE OF MAGH BIHU

As January unfolds, Assam prepares to welcome one of its most cherished festivals, Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu. This vibrant celebration marks the conclusion of the harvest season and the beginning of a period filled with abundance, joy, and community spirit. The word Bhogali comes from “bhog”, symbolising enjoyment, feasting, and the warmth of being together. Rooted deeply in agrarian culture, the festival acknowledges nature’s generosity and honours the hard work of the farmers. What Magh Bihu Represents Magh Bihu signifies the time when harvested grains fill the traditional storehouses called bhorals, representing prosperity and relief after rigorous months in the fields. Historically, it marked a well-deserved pause for farmers, a moment to celebrate the fruits of their labour. Over time, it has grown beyond rural boundaries, becoming a festival enjoyed by families, communities, and institutions across Assam. More than a cultural event, Magh Bihu carries a meaningful message: unity, gratitude, sharing, and respect for nature and tradition. The making and exchanging of pitha, laru, and other rice delicacies not only add to the festive joy but also reflect the values of hospitality and generosity. Uruka: A Night of Joy, Community & Celebration The heart of Magh Bihu lies in Uruka, the evening before the festival day. This night is marked by community cooking, bonding, and joyful gatherings. Traditionally, groups would build temporary shelters known as bhelaghors near fields or water bodies, using bamboo and hay. The bhelaghor became a symbol of shared effort and fellowship, where everyone participated in preparing a grand feast. Freshly harvested rice, fish curries, vegetables, and meat form the menu of Uruka, reminding everyone that great meals are not only about food, but about shared work, laughter, and companionship. As the night slowly fades into dawn, villagers assemble for the lighting of the Meji, a large ceremonial bonfire. With prayers, offerings of rice cakes, sesame seeds, and betel leaves are placed into the flames as a gesture of thankfulness. The fire symbolises the burning away of negativity and the welcoming of prosperity, hope, and good fortune. The Deeper Meaning Behind the Tradition Magh Bihu represents far more than seasonal celebration, it carries timeless lessons:
  • Gratitude: Appreciating the harvest, nature’s blessings, and the efforts of those who work selflessly.
  • Unity: Whether through shared meals or building bhelaghars, the festival demonstrates the strength of togetherness.
  • Preservation of heritage: In an ever-changing world, such festivals ensure that cultural memories and practices remain alive for younger generations.
A Message for Learners and the Community For students and young learners, Magh Bihu offers a valuable life lesson: joy lies in simplicity, collaboration, and respect for tradition. It reminds us that while modern learning prepares us for the future, cultural celebrations connect us to our roots, values, and identity. At SFS Guwahati, this festival is not just a cultural acknowledgment, it is an opportunity to embrace the essence of learning beyond classrooms. As we celebrate Magh Bihu, let us continue to nurture values of community, gratitude, creativity, and shared happiness. Wishing Everyone a Prosperous Magh Bihu As the Meji flames rise, may they illuminate our paths with wisdom, unity, and hope. May this Magh Bihu bring warmth into our homes and inspiration into our learning journeys. From all of us at SFS Guwahati, Warm wishes for a joyful, meaningful, and prosperous Magh Bihu.
