LEARNING BY DOING: THE ROLE OF EXPERIMENTS IN TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATION

Learning is more than just absorbing facts from textbooks; it is understanding, applying, and creating. True learning takes place when the student goes beyond the pages of his or her books and enters into real-world experiences. It is in this context that the age-old adage "learning by doing" gains special significance. Hands-on learning, based on experiments and active participation, is a key area in shaping young minds for the future.

Experiments and experiential learning cultivate curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in students. When learners participate in hands-on activities, they not only learn but also acquire the skills to analyze, question, and innovate. Whether it is a science experiment in the lab, a project-based assignment, or a group activity, such experiences cement concepts better than any amount of passive learning.

One of the most transformative changes in learning-by-doing relates to inspiring creativeness and innovative thinking. Experiments are set free for children to think without the box: explore new thoughts and arrive at solutions in unconventionally appropriate ways. Experimentation builds a sense of resilience because students quite often experience the failure of their efforts and learn the value of staying with the test and error, not giving up. As time goes by, these skills become invaluable in the real world where adaptability and creative problem-solving are the name of the game.

Consider the increasing focus on STEM education-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Schools worldwide are introducing hands-on learning to their curricula through innovation labs and maker spaces. These settings foster students to design, build, and experiment and, in turn, understand complex theories through practical experience. By learning through experimentation, students are better equipped to understand the interplay of theoretical knowledge and practical application, which is essential for success in the modern world.

Moreover, the benefits of experiential learning extend beyond academics. It fosters collaboration, communication, and leadership skills among students. Group projects, research assignments, and hands-on activities often require teamwork, where students learn to share ideas, respect differing opinions, and work toward common goals. Such collaborative efforts nurture empathy and social skills, which are just as critical as academic excellence in today’s interconnected world.

Learning by doing plays a vital role in the arts and humanities too. Creative writing workshops, theatre performances, and art exhibitions offer students a scope to express their creativity and bring new insights to the fore. These activities promote students to try out the horizons of imagination and hone their skills by the practice and the feedback received.

SFS Guwahati has always led the way for innovation and hands-on learning culture. The school believes that experiential education has immense value in building well-rounded individuals ready to take on the challenges of the future. Keeping in line with this philosophy, SFS Guwahati has an upcoming Innovation Summit and Career Fair on 10th and 11th January 2025 which is a yearly event. This event will allow students to share innovative ideas, engage with industry experts, and discover new career avenues. The summit aims to fuel the inquisitive spirit of invention in young minds and challenge them to think beyond boundaries.

The Innovation Summit would host exhibitions and live demonstrations with professionals, thereby allowing students to learn from professionals and gain an understanding of developing fields. With the participation in such events, the students would not only get an exposure to various things but also understand practical applications of the knowledge they gained. The Career Fair would also allow students to map their future by introducing them to experts across different industries and academic institutions.

Learning must be incubated in an environment that transcends traditional classrooms. Schools should embrace a pedagogy that emphasizes experimentation, exploration, and engagement. With this becomes the foundation, I can ensure students are prepared to be successful in this always-innovating world - where adaptation is a key determinant of success. Learning by doing is not a method but a mindset that converts education from mere instruction into meaningful exploration. As we now look forward to the Innovation Summit and Career Fair at SFS Guwahati, we must continue encouraging our students to experiment, create, and learn through real-life experiences. In fact, the future belongs to innovators.
